Farewell to pets when emigrtaing
« on: July 22, 2011, 10:44:08 am »
It takes time to reflect which I'm doing 3 years later !!

The best thing we did was get Paddywag. He filled our lives here in NZ and we have great beach walks and when I'm at work he is my husband's devoted companion.. and he sleeps on our bed !

Anyone having to re-home doggies when emigrating, it does help to get a pet once in NZ and one can buy one on Trade Me. (bit less costly than from a pet shop.) They are expensive here, but without a pet we'd feel even more bereft, as we had a menagerie of animals in SA!  ::)

See my article just posted - I could swear my dog is psychic on evehemming.blogspot.com

Me and DD want a pet so bad, but OH is not biting - yet   I might have to resort to finding a "stray" and that way he can't say no.  In the meantime, he has resorted to buying DD FurReal pets - I mean really  :D

With the new quarantine period only 10 days, maybe more people will bring their pets with them and can avoid the stress of re-homing them. :( :(

Are you sure? Do you have a link to this? I am horrified as I had to leave 6 dogs behind and it broke my heart.  :'( The main reason was the cost and the length of the quarantine period!
Hi there. We moved to NZ in Dec 2009. So far so good! We love it here. You're welcome to visit my blog and read our story.

Agh, fantastic! We have a tri colour staffie we brought from SA....as you know they NEVER grow up, I was really concerned that he would not handle the quarantine, but alas - he did fantastically!! The 6 months at Keringa was a breeze, however, he did not cope well in Perth quarantine (Byford) as arrived in June (winter) and they are not as jacked up as the SA quarantine.....FREEZING, and WET! yes, if we had known about the new quarantine laws, and where we were going to land up....we too would have saved a lot of money......no worries, would do it again in a heartbeat! We are looking to get another staffie baby soon.... :D and with the new one, we will need to learn another language, as this one can understand Afrikaans should we want to chat  about those things like...'park, walk, car, going out' etc.......they are so flippin clever!
