Jannee, you did the right thing!! You must get yourself also a NZ dog now...
Lea, Kila is also a dog full of stress. I told the people at the quarantine, and they took note. But she coped. I prayed everyday for her. They are stronger than you think!! But I'm sure you do the right thing - that was best for your dogs and yourself!! You as owner will know the best. I hope you make peace with your decision and start moving on!!
Esresia, if they advertise a renthouse with "no pets allowed" still ask them if they won't consider your pets. Tell them you will pay more bond fee. And also don't tell them your dogs is so big.... They will ask - say its medium size and they stay outside. Don't tell them they sleep in the house!! You know they won't rip the carpet or dirt in the house. They don't- and they also don't want to take the change...The agents will make an appointment to come and check your house. Tell them before the time you will be out but they are welcome to come. Take then your dogs to the beech or somewhere. Then there is no room for anything they can "moan" about.
I really hope you get a house!!
Rest assured we are totally at peace with our decision as wonderful friends of ours took our two little miniature pinchers and when we saw our doggies 10 months later (when we went back to finalise the sale of our house), they were totally at peace, so well settled and very happy. We absolutely made the right decision as far as our doggies are concerned. They have totally adopted their new owners. And we've moved on a long long time ago, we're certainly not heartbroken anymore or anything like that and we know they aren't missing us at all. I agree with you that all of us need to make the decision that is best for us.
The purpose of my topic was really just to let people know that it can be challenging to find a rental home where pets are allowed and it was to wish everybody good luck with their decisions.
Just out of interest, I had a quick look on Trade Me where a large number of rental properties are advertised and where we found all our rental properties the past 4 years, and of the 70 latest listing properties in the general Auckland area that I looked at (South, North, East and West), 46 had a definite no pet policy, 4 allowed pets, 19 did not specify, but that does not mean they will be happy with a pet, and 2 allowed cats, but definitely no dogs. And then a person also need to keep in mind where you need to live in relation to transport / work and school zones is a big one to keep in mind if you have kids, so if you then have pets, your options become very limited indeed. I had a look at some other random areas, and certainly found most saying definitely no pets. In our experience dealing with lots of various agents and owners who managed their own properties, we found that the majority were not willing to negotiate on the matter of pets, one was willing to consider a fully grown cat, but no kitten and no other pets and one agent even mentioned to us that they knew of an owner who evicted somebody because they kept pets without permission.
Personally I wouldn't lie to agents as there is a chance you would be caught out and then your reputation won't be so good anymore and certainly having good references makes all the difference. (certainly where we live now the next door neighbours rent their place from the same owner as us and the owner lives just down the road so if we had to keep pets when we were not allowed to or let them sleep inside when we said they only sleep outside or that they are medium sized instead of big he would definitely know)
If you work with an agent, you won't always know who the owner is or even where he / she might live, you also won't know if they have any other tenants close to where you might live, so you can't say for sure they wouldn't notice.
But certainly if this works for you, then that's great. I'm very happy for those who decide to bring their pets and manage to find a rental home without any effort. From my experience it would be pretty challenging (and we lived in both Wellington area and Auckland area).
But yes, fully agree with you, you need to make the right decision for you! I'm really glad your dog settled so well!
